Frequently Asked questions
1. I have a question about dissections.
You will have the opportunity to dissect a fish, a frog, a rat, and a sheep's brain (and an owl pellet, if you want to count that as a dissection). You are not required to participate in any dissections and may choose to do the alternate assignment. You must have completed all quarter work in order to participate in the dissection (or any lab).
2. What color is this object?
Mr. Storvik is colorblind. As you learned in 7th grade, colorblindness is an inherited trait much more common in males than in females due to chromosomal differences. In Mr. Storvik's case, his maternal great-grandmother was allegedly completely colorblind (monochromacy). Mr. Storvik has a much more common form of colorblindness called deuteranopia which affects his ability to perceive shades of red and green. Of his surviving 6 male relatives, 4 of them are also colorblind.
To directly answer your question, in 99% of cases, Mr. Storvik can tell the color of an object. Shades of green and red will occasionally throw him off - forest green vs. brown is a particularly difficult one. In general the color red does not appear as "vibrant" to him as it does to observers who are not colorblind.
3. When is promotion, the 8th grade dance, finals, or the trip to Six Flags?
Promotion: June 1st, 2023
Dance: TBD
Six Flags: TBD
4. Can I do a retake?
Probably. Refer to the class rules and policies.
5. Can I turn this in late?
If it is graded on completion, no. If it is graded on correctness or a rubric, yes. Refer to the class rules and policies.
6. What is going on with your hall passes?
They are Atari 2600 cartridges, one of the first home video game systems. They probably still work, but trust me, you don't want to play them.
7. How tall are you?
195 cm.
8. The self-check quiz is telling me I need permission.
First, try tapping on the little compass icon in the upper-right corner of your screen. If that doesn't work, you're not logged in to your kid56 account in Safari. Go to google.com, log out of all accounts, then log back in to only your kid56 account.
9. How old are you?
Pretty old. When I went to Woodland, it had less students than Viking.
10. I'm absent today. What should I work on?
Refer to your weekly checklist in Google Drive.
11. What kind of coffee do you like?
Whole bean, the kind I can grind myself.
12. What does my grade on Google Classroom mean? (Why did I get a 1 or a 99?)
Short answer: 1 = missing, 99 = absent/no count
Long answer: If it's out of 4 points, it is graded on the 5-4-3-2-1 scale. 5=exceeds, 4=meets, 3=almost meets, 2=meets with help, 1=does not meet
If it's graded on correctness, the grade is the point value of the assignment. a "1" means you didn't turn it in and it is marked as missing. "99" means you were absent and the assignment will be entered as a no-count.
